About the Institute

Experiential education is a pedagogy that provides transformative learning opportunities for students and teachers alike. Experiential education has a long history dating as far back as Confucius: “Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember; involve me and I will understand.” Many schools around the world engage in experiential teaching and learning practices. ISEEN’s inaugural Global Institute, hosted by Chadwick International, will connect educators from around the Asia Pacific region to share practices, meet other international educators, learn new theoretical developments and serve as a laboratory to explore questions and ideas around experiential education pedagogy.

About the host Chadwick International

Chadwick International School (CI) is a K-12 independent school based in Songdo, South Korea. Founded in 2010 as an expansion of Chadwick School (based in Palos Verdes, California, USA), the school has been a part of the new city of Songdo almost from the very beginning and is an integral part of the growth and development of this unique city known for innovation. The establishment of the CI campus offers opportunities for students around the world to benefit from Chadwick’s world-class education.

With a mission to “develop global citizens with keen minds, exemplary character, self-knowledge, and the ability to lead,” Chadwick International is a leader in experiential education in the region making their campus the perfect place to launch an Asia-Pacific Regional Institute focusing on the pedagogy. Chadwick School has been an Association for Experiential Education (AEE)-accredited institution since 1996 which certifies that there is an integrated and dedicated commitment to the pedagogy throughout all the school’s programming from classroom teaching to extracurricular offerings. The experiential learning pedagogy is clear within the school’s philosophy and is an area we will explore in depth at the Global Institute.

About the Facilitator

We are excited to have Jennifer Stanchfield join us at Chadwick International to serve as the Institute facilitator. She is known internationally for her work in helping educators add to their repertoire of teaching and group facilitation tools and strategies, especially around experiential education. She works with schools, colleges, community organizations and businesses all over the world- helping educators increase engagement and facilitate meaningful reflection and group dialogue to increase learning outcomes. The focus of her work is helping educators connect the dots between differentiated instruction, brain-based teaching techniques, experiential education, social-emotional learning and community building.

Jennifer Stanchfield inspires educators and learners the world over with her workshops and publications. Her depth of experience, creativity and knowledge of educational theory and practice is evident in her innovative yet practical workshops and publications in which she incorporates the art of facilitation and teaching with brain-based and pedagogical research.

Who Should Attend

ISEEN embraces many forms of experiential learning such as outdoor/adventure education, global education, service-learning/community engagement, student leadership, and diversity/equity/inclusion.  Educators from independent and international schools who wish to transform their teaching and connect with like-minded colleagues will gain valuable tools and global networks. The global institute is geared towards staff, classroom teachers, and administrators who work in the various strands of experiential education programming.

What you will get out of the Institute

ISEEN has 15 years’ experience creating immersive, practical, and transformative programs for experiential educators in independent schools in North America. At our inaugural Global Institute, we will utilize experiential education pedagogy throughout our programs, so you can expect to follow the Kolb experiential learning cycle including direct action, reflection, and education. This means participants will be moving around a lot, exploring Songdo and areas around Seoul, and learning from Chadwick International’s experiential education programming that can be directly applied to your work at your home school and beyond. You’ll also meet and connect with amazing people doing or interested in doing this kind of work around the region. And, of course, you’re going to have fun. It is truly a professional development experience like no other.

The learning outcomes for the Global Institute include:

  1. A foundational understanding of experiential education pedagogy, both the theory and the practice.
  2. Grounding in definition, skills, and practices of experiential education. Those skills include facilitation practices, culturally appropriate risk management, reflection, and connecting experiential education to the curriculum including IB.
  3. Understanding ExEd in the context of the local culture. We’ll be utilizing experiential education explore Songdo and beyond so you can experience the type of experiential education Chadwick students do (we call it “ExEd in Action”).
  4. Learn about the host school’s community and experiential education practices.
  5. Connect, network, and share best practices with other educators practicing/interested in experiential pedagogy.

Educational Service Providers

We will hold 7 spots for Educational Service Providers! Educational Service Providers (or ESPs) are organizations that work with schools to offer their students a variety of services (e.g., an external global education or outdoor ed program sending students on short-term international excursions). The registration for ESPs is separate from our school attendees, so please read through the following information carefully.

  • The 7 spots reserved for ESPs are available until March 16th. If the spots are not filled, they’ll be opened up to school attendees. Each organization is limited to one spot and is available on a first come-first served basis.
  • All ESP Attendees must be ISEEN Members prior to registering (become a member here!).
  • While ESPs gain significant value by attending the Global Institute and the intimate networking opportunities available to them to build relationships with member schools, their primary role as an ISEEN member attendee will be that of a fellow educator. To learn more about sponsorship opportunities for greater visibility, please contact ISEEN Executive Director, Shoshanna Sumka ([email protected]).

Travel Logistics

Hotel

Our home away from home for the week will be Hotel SkyPark Songdo. We’ve secured Chadwick International’s discounted price of a standard room for KRW 77,000/night (approx. $70 USD/night). Breakfast is KRW 16,000 per person/day (approx $14 USD) if you choose to eat at the hotel (it is a nice buffet). This discounted rate is available through September 1, 2021, so book early!

To book at this discounted rate at Hotel SkyPark download this form and send the completed form to [email protected].

Travel

As we hope we’ve illustrated, ISEEN isn’t like other conferences. It’s a fully immersive few days together. Because of that, we value your participation immensely and we ask that when you make your arrangements, you’re able to participate in the full Institute. We believe that participating in all of the Institute activities enhances the quality of your experience and that of your peers. If you know that you cannot manage the full schedule, maybe consider joining in a future Institute. Additionally, if you’d like to see more of the region outside of the Institute, we recommend planning in some extra travel days before or after the Institute to explore on your own.

When making your travel arrangements please plan to be at the hotel in time to take the shuttle at 3:30pm or to be at Chadwick no later than 3:45pm on Thur, Oct 7th, 2021 (unless you are taking part in an earlier pre-conference workshop or activity) and that your departure plans do not require you to leave Songdo prior to 1:00 pm on Sun, Oct 10th, 2021.

Planes

You’ll be flying into Incheon International Airport (ICN) which is just a quick hop over some bridges to Songdo (which, itself, is located ~50 km from Seoul city center).

Getting To/From The Airport

  • Hotel SkyPark is about a 30-minute drive from the airport by shuttle and about an hour by Subway. A shuttle may be reserved through the hotel at least two days in advance (email the hotel at [email protected] to make those arrangements). Check out the detailed information about how to get to the hotel from the airport both by shuttle and subway (make sure you’re using the “Incheon Airport” directions).
  • Taxis are very easy to secure form the airport as they’ll be lined up outside of Terminal 1 (near Exit 3 on 1F). More information on the airport website.

Getting Around

There will be shuttle service provided between Hotel Skypark and Chadwick International for Institute activities, so attendees don’t need to worry about that transportation. But if you want to sightsee on your own before, after or during the downtime offered during the Institute, Songdo is very walkable and the subway is a great option for getting to Seoul.

You may also want to download the Kakao apps on your phone before you start planning how to get around the region. Kakao is South Korea’s empire of communication in just about any modern form (learn about Kakao in this article). The first apps to download include:

  • KakaoMap -- this is your South Korea “Google Maps” (in fact, you’ll find that Google maps does not have good South Korea data)
  • KakaoTaxi - this is your uber/lyft for your time in South Korea.

Driving/Parking at the Hotel and Chadwick:

For those who are driving to the Institute, parking is rarely a problem in Songdo and there’s often free or very inexpensive parking both on the street and in city parking lots.

Driving to Hotel SkyPark, there’s a free parking garage under the hotel. While we encourage those staying at the hotel to take the shuttle or walk to the activities at Chadwick, there is free parking at the school as well. You can find directions to the school online.
